Alphabet Around the Room

Showcase blossoming alphabet or phonics skills with student-illustrated word displays.

  • Grade 1
    Kindergarten
    Pre-Kindergarten
  • 30 Minutes or Less
  • Directions

    1. Review the alphabet with students. Can they recognize the each letter? Have them practice writing the letters.
    2. Ask students to write each letter in uppercase form on a separate piece of construction paper. Encourage students to make the letters bold and large enough to decorate them. Then have children cut strips of construction paper and write a word that begins with that letter on each strip. As they glue the words to the main letter, have them practice the phonetic sound.
    3. Have students attach their work to a string in alphabetical order using paper clips. When complete, hang the full alphabet display around the room.
  • Standards

LA: Add drawings or other visual displays to written text to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

  • Adaptations

Students can add new words to the letters as they learn how to pronounce and spell them.

Students can create a personal illustrated journal of words they learn throughout the year.

Are there students in the class who speak or are learning a language that uses a different alphabet or character system? They can show examples of words in that language to the class.
