LOVE Poster

1. Invite students to research pop or contemporary artists such as Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein to learn about their simple style of drawing and painting, as well as the eras during which they lived. Organize a variety of text and electronic resources for students to view during this investigation. Once research is complete, provide time for students to compare and contrast these artists. Students will be creating an art piece that represents the era and artwork of these contemporary artists.
2. Using Crayola® Watercolor Paints, students paint a large piece of white construction paper in gradients of one color from the darkest shade and gradually ending with the lightest. Dry.
3. Divide the painted paper with Crayola Colored Pencils or Color Sticks into four large, identical rectangles. Cut them out with Crayola Scissors.
4. Write one letter of the word LOVE on each rectangle with colored pencils using a contemporary or block style. Fill in each letter with gradients of one color, starting with the darkest shade and gradually ending with the lightest. Decorate the background of the letters using colored pencils or color sticks to create the same gradient technique. With Crayola School Glue, attach the four rectangular letters to a larger construction paper background. Leave space between each one and at the top.
5. Using Crayola Fine Tip Markers, write words, such as A Mother Means..., in large letters across the top of the poster. Students use their imaginations to come up with other phrases or words to describe mothers or the people they will honor with their posters.
6. To create an added dimension on posters, students write the same words continuously around each letter of the word LOVE.
7. Students share posters with classmates.

VA: Select and use the qualities of structures and functions of art to improve communication of ideas.

VA: Describe and place a variety of art objects in historical and cultural contexts.

Provide students the opportunity to investigate the life and work of well-known pop artists, such as Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, etc. Students organize their research in an electronic format for presentation to classmates.

Encourage small groups of students to create stencils of the entire alphabet . Students may wish to create an additional poster using another term, such as "live", "wish", "plan", etc., and can use the stencils. Add gradients of color to enhance each word. Include phrases pertaining the term continuously around the outside of the letters.

Use this style of poster to write someone's name or nickname. Write phrases pertaining to that person continuously around the letters of their name.
